Innovation is at the core of what we do at ��ֳ�, and we believe that it should involve every single member of a team. Collaboration, transparency, and open dialogue with colleagues is key, and we have found that this approach allows for challenge, free flowing of new ideas and creative ideas. ��ֳ�'s success in driving innovation is a testament to the power of teamwork and the value of asking new questions and challenging assumptions regularly.

I have found that the positive working environment at ��ֳ� helps foster innovation in the workplace, especially when it comes to working in teams. When team members feel comfortable and supported, they are more likely to share their ideas and perspectives openly. From my experiences at ��ֳ�, collaboration, communication, and trust are critical components of an innovative team environment.

Crucially, we recognize that innovation goes beyond just discovering new medicines. It is also about delivering these medicines effectively to the patients who need them. To achieve this, all ��ֳ� colleagues are committed to regularly asking new questions and testing our understanding, allowing us to continuously improve and make a real impact on patients' lives. Discovering and developing new medicines is a key part of what we do here at ��ֳ�. But we believe that a new medicine is only truly valuable and innovative if it’s meaningful to patients. It has to be a solution that patients really want, and which makes a genuine difference to their lives.

The creation of meaningful medicines at ��ֳ� doesn’t happen by luck or by chance, it happens because we work hard to implement partnerships with patients at all stages of the drug development process.

There is growing evidence that patients’ contributions during the very early stages of drug development can have a positive impact on research into new drugs. Because at this stage researchers are gaining an understanding of patient communities and their unmet needs, patient-friendly research approaches and identifying meaningful outcome measures for patients. Who better to inform these processes than the patients themselves?

At ��ֳ� we have developed a new end-to-end framework designed to ensure that patients and key stakeholders can provide input as early as possible into our research and development programs, as well as the entire drug lifecycle. At the clinical trial stage, we co-create protocols with patients / patient advocacy groups to help us assess protocol complexity and minimize the burden on patients.

Today, approximately 46% of our trials also have a Decentralized Clinical Trials (DCT) patient-centric component. DCTs help to make our clinical trials more accessible and easier to participate in for patients who may not be able to easily access a clinical trial in person, and they can help us to reach patients living in under-represented geographies.

In the area of Parkinson’s, we have joined forces with Parkinson’s UK, and the Parkinson's Foundation in the U.S., to establish a Patient Engagement Council for Parkinson’s Research (PECPR). The aim of the council is to ensure that patient insights are central to the overall strategy and activities across ��ֳ�’s Parkinson’s Disease research and early clinical development program. Through this collaborative partnership, the council aims to embed patient involvement in the earliest stages and throughout each step of ��ֳ�’s Parkinson’s drug development program.

At ��ֳ� we celebrate the fact that patients are increasingly active and empowered when it comes to decisions about their healthcare – they are no longer ‘customers’, but more ‘co-creators’ in the R&D process. We celebrate it because we hope that by closing the gap between scientists and patients, we can discover new ways to target the drivers of disease.

As a society, we tend to think of innovation as a series of big eureka moments. Newton and his falling apple, Archimedes and the golden crown, Marie Curie and her discovery of radioactivity. And while this is a romantic view on science, it’s rarely representative of the lengthy and continuously evolving approach to research and development in medicine.

Scientific discoveries rarely come from one person. While many famous discoveries have an equally famous face attached to them, the reality is a sea of faces, a collaboration between diverse scientists, working together to solve current and future problems.

At ��ֳ�, our discoveries rarely come from a single moment, because our patients deserve more. They deserve treatments with years of research, robust testing and constant questioning to ensure we’re never settling for just OK.

Sometimes, the answers won’t come from inside the walls of ��ֳ�, and it’s essential that we show enough humility to know when to bring outside expertise into the equation. Innovation is strategically partnering, investing in meaningful relationships with those who have the additional technology and data capabilities to help what ��ֳ� and our industry can do for patients and society.

Our partnerships with technology leaders, other pharma and academic institutions allow us to focus on cutting-edge pharmaceutical research, enabling scientists from industry and academia to work together to develop innovative medicines to treat serious diseases in immunology and neurology.

‘Innovation’ can mean many different things to many different people, but what unites each of these unique interpretations is an understanding that a key element is to challenge your thinking and the thinking of your colleagues. Challenging your own thinking and having others challenge it is integral to any culture which claims to have innovation at its heart.

At ��ֳ� we recognize that the solitary exploration of ideas will never be as productive as when we work together. That’s why our culture not only fosters curiosity but also collaboration. Collaboration between groups some may perceive as separate; with patients, academia and industry partners, can lead to the whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts.

��ֳ�’s passion for challenge and collaboration, and our people’s intrinsic curiosity, create an environment in which innovation can thrive and where external connections are encouraged. Our strong network of collaborators helps challenge our thinking and exposes us to new ideas and ways of working.

This is particularly important in an era when technology is revolutionizing how pharmaceutical companies conduct research and develop medicines, as well as how patients experience healthcare and how healthcare professionals deliver it. We know that digital transformation has the potential to help us identify novel disease biology insights, and our digital partners can help us to realize this.

We’ve been working closely with several high-profile collaborators in the digital space to combine their computational services, cloud, and artificial intelligence (AI) with our drug discovery and development capabilities. It is our hope and belief that digital platforms can support our scientists to discover and develop new differentiated medicines in a more efficient and innovative way.

The same pursuit of innovation and desire to challenge our status-quo, inspired and guided our journey into adeno-associated viral vector (AAV) gene therapy. We believe that this type of therapy will further enable our transition from symptomatic treatments to disease-modifying and potentially curative solutions. Initially we envision these solutions for well-defined monogenic patient populations, but with the ambition to address complex, multifactorial conditions in the future.

Patients remain at the center of everything we do here at ��ֳ� – a philosophy that is demonstrated day in day out; apparent at every level, from corporate strategic decision-making to the hallway discussions with colleagues. We recognize that innovation and collaboration are key in our mission to serve patients and society. Here at ��ֳ�, we see ‘innovation’ as inventing something new and useful. And in no field is that more relevant than in that of medicine – something ‘new’ could be a disease modifying medicine, and something ‘useful’ could be the novel way in which we discover it.

Innovative digital technology is undoubtedly transforming how we treat and manage disease. This is in large part down to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data generation, processing and computing speeds, which make the impossible, possible. For example, AI can help describe the structural connections between atoms and molecules and optimize desirable properties for drugs. We can now sequence the hundreds of amino acids in each and every protein. Then, informed by AI, we can edit antibody sequences to be more stable and effective against disease-causing proteins. AI can also interpret the health of individual cells and - using this information - we can gain a deeper understanding of disease biology and pathology, and how drugs may be able to reverse it.

At the clinical trials stage, advanced AI can help to keep track of treatment schedules and trial recruitment, help to make trials easier to access for patients, and make the data easier to access for physicians. This is all a work in progress, we are constantly ‘training’ and advancing the capabilities of our AI models, with each new discovery and input of data, AI is learning and getting more efficient.

But the value of AI for patients, now and in the future, is undeniable –the more efficient use of genetic data, and the modelling of disease pathways and gene sequences all help us to identify exactly what the patient needs so that we can works towards individualise treatment. It’s also removing the barriers imposed by ethnicity or geography, because we now have access to, and an understanding of, much larger data sets.

AI shows us not only the power of digital technology but also the power of collaboration – our chemists and biologists are working side by side and trusting our data scientists to empower scientific research.

AI is not without its challenges of course – it is difficult to define a ‘gold standard’ for the pharma domain, particularly given the rate of progress, so there is a test-and-learn approach which must be adopted when analysing and revaluating our AI models. Attention must be paid to any bias embedded in AI frameworks, making sure that they are generated with comprehensive and 'clean' data.

Ultimately though, we believe that innovations like AI will help enable new discoveries and accelerate drug development, all for the benefit of people suffering from disease. That’s why innovation is our driving force at ��ֳ�. We're filled with anticipation about what lies ahead!

The Oxford English dictionary defines ‘innovation’ as “the introduction of new things, ideas or ways of doing something.” Many industries strive to be innovative – to develop a new product which will steal the market. But perhaps nowhere is innovation as important as it is in the healthcare and medicine, where a new ‘thing’ could quite literally be the difference between life and death.

At ��ֳ� we are on a mission to pursue continuous innovation. It’s a bold mission, but an incredibly exciting one. To us, innovation comes from leveraging new technologies and new platforms, from a greater understanding of human biology and the diseases we treat and from being at the centre of a super network of collaborators, spanning industry, healthcare & academia.

But, perhaps counterintuitively, it can also come from failure. James Joyce, the Irish poet and novelist, famously wrote that “mistakes are our portals of discovery.” Whilst failure can be uncomfortable, it’s an essential part of scientific research and discovery.

We observe, measure, hypothesize and then test. We’re working with incredibly complex biological systems, so our tests don’t always yield the results we hoped for, and our hypotheses are often wrong. However, we can always learn from why we didn’t get the results we wanted. We take these learnings, and we observe, measure, hypothesize and test again.

I’m proud to work for a company where ‘testing again’ is celebrated, where failure doesn’t reflect badly on the individuals involved. It is only in an environment like this where true innovation can flourish.

While both important, at ��ֳ� we believe that ‘innovation’ and ‘invention’ are quite distinct. An invention is something completely new, but innovation can be more than just a single idea; it can be found in small, incremental changes or improvements to how we work, how we think, how we see or how we use things, or to pre-existing systems, hierarchies, models, products, services, and processes. But when taken together, these small changes - or improvements – made to an existing product or service can make a big difference and add value.

Examples of incremental innovation are everywhere. The laser, for example, was invented in 1958 and first applied in healthcare as a non-contact scalpel. New applications of lasers include reshaping corneas, photodynamic therapy for cancer, and transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) for severe angina. Even Apple, famed for disruptive innovation, take an incremental innovation approach to its iPhone. It has maintained releasing regular upgraded versions; each offering small scale improvements.

We live in a world that likes ‘quick-wins’ and short-cuts. However, in science, making advancements simply does not happen that way. It takes dedication, hard work, and often time. So, at ��ֳ� we celebrate the small improvements and recognise their value as steps forward in a continuous pursuit of innovation as we strive to improve the lives of people suffering severe diseases.
