It drives our positive impacts on society and the environment as well as our long-term financial success. It鈥檚 critical.<br><br>Our two foundational topics for sustainability are our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across our business and the ethical principles of transparency, respect and integrity, while we focus our efforts on improving health around us through four critical areas 鈥� scientific innovation, access to medicines, employees鈥� health, safety and wellbeing, and the health of the planet 鈥� with measurable and transparent goals for each area, to be achieved by 2030. <br><br>To achieve these goals and accelerate our efforts and impact, we established an External Sustainability Advisory Board (ESAB). Our ESAB brings together six thought leaders, each recognized as a change agent in society. Working in collaboration with our CEO, Executive Committee, Board of non-executive Directors and other senior leaders, the ESAB will help us stay on track with what society expects from a sustainable biopharma leader. <br><br>The ESAB will provide external expertise and perspective on 金禾娱乐城鈥檚 sustainability approach to deepen 金禾娱乐城鈥檚 understanding of sustainability and provide insights and recommendations to enhance our positive contribution to society.<br><div><article data-quickedit-entity-id="media/14680" class="align-center media media--type-image media--view-mode-default"> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__items"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/ucb_header_image/public/ucb-inline/金禾娱乐城-ESAB-1.png.webp?itok=ojzs-FLd" width="1567" height="694" alt="金禾娱乐城 ESAB 1 " typeof="foaf:Image"> </div> </article> </div><div><br></div><b>Veronique Toully</b>, our Global Head of Sustainability, shares a few words on the role of our ESAB: <br><br>鈥淏usiness must be part of the solution to co-create the world we want to live in. And we established our ESAB as part of our ambition to impact positively society around us. This means having top of mind the value we want to create for patients, the people who work with us and the community in which we operate, as well as the protection of the planet. <br><br>In our ESAB, we found like-minded people. Simultaneously, the members are experts in their domain with a holistic view of what sustainability is and what should drive it. We鈥檙e extremely grateful to every one of them for joining us on our sustainability journey. <br><br>They will help us drive the common sustainability themes all industries must address and the ones specific to healthcare: how to innovate, how to tackle unmet needs and societal health issues and how to ensure solutions are accessible to patients 鈥� with the latter the topic poised to have the greatest short term impact. <br><br>While our inaugural meeting identified numerous topics to explore 鈥� including ensuring that digital transformation and sustainability leverage each other for even greater impact 鈥� during our next meeting, we will reflect together on how we can contribute to improving access to healthcare.鈥� <br><br>We are delighted to have <b>Charlotte Ersb酶ll</b>, a Founding Partner of Hansen &amp; Ersb酶ll and Trustee at Forum for the Future, as Chair of the 金禾娱乐城 ESAB. We asked Charlotte for her thoughts on the 金禾娱乐城 ESAB: <br><br>鈥淰alue creation today is much more complex than just merely ensuring a good profit and bottom line. Sometimes companies forget they are dependent on the world in which they do business. Unless we do something about climate risks, the erosion of nature and growing inequalities, it鈥檚 going to be a challenging environment for running a healthy business. <br><br>Businesses have an opportunity to be part of the solution. Seeing your business through a sustainability lens allows you to take an outside-in perspective, understand your ecosystem, stakeholder expectations and where you can have material impact. It鈥檚 about stepping outside your business-as-usual space, acknowledging your vulnerabilities and imperfections and asking other people to help you be part of the solution.<br><br>And it鈥檚 not about being perfect. It鈥檚 about showcasing where you are on your journey, understanding where you鈥檙e coming from. For example, the younger generation wants to see what you are delivering 鈥� and transparency around where it isn鈥檛 easy.<br><br>You have to start sustainability at the core of your business, not the fringes. And at our first ESAB meeting, we will talk about access to healthcare because that is at the core of 金禾娱乐城鈥檚 social contract and license to operate.<br><br>I see in 金禾娱乐城 a very patient-centric organization with a great legacy; a company that is serious about sustainability, and with the courage to bring external stakeholders in, listening to them and taking their perspectives and guidance on board. I was struck by the extreme openness coming from the 金禾娱乐城 team at our inaugural meeting. They were willing to discuss and be vulnerable and listen to the external advisors' input. And people understood that change has to start from within; we talked about organizational readiness and the values and talent needed when embarking on this sustainability journey. <br><br>As a pharma company, evidence-based by nature, we also discussed the worrying trend of eroding public trust in science and data, and the importance for re-building that trust. And we outlined how digital transformation can accelerate the sustainability journey.<br><br>Exploring these topics from many different perspectives were truly enlightening. We invite thought leaders to join us to stimulate our curiosity and help us see the world with new eyes. Their talks help us step back and reflect on challenges and opportunities the world is facing right now.</div><div><br></div><div id="ext-gen937">We kicked off our 2021 #imagine webinars by welcoming <a href="https://sociology.unm.edu/people/faculty%20profile/Nancy%20Lopez.html" class="disclaimer-1" target="_blank">Professor Nancy L贸pez</a>, sociologist and expert in intersectionality. Her <b>What鈥檚 your street race?</b> talk reflected on intersectionality as a tool for practicing critical race, gender and class equity 鈥� a topic that could not be more timely, that came shortly after Martin Luther King Day. </div><div><br></div><div>Professor L贸pez began by inviting us to think about street race, a concept she came up with to reflect the social meanings assigned to you based on what you look like. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also a relationship of power and changes depending on which country you鈥檙e in,鈥� she explained, noting how these meanings assigned to you shape your experiences: your access s to healthcare, housing and even voting rights. </div><div><br></div><div>Highlighting how 鈥渨e didn't create systems of racism, but we're all located in them鈥�, the Professor pointed out the importance of understanding the historical context of our street race. Only then, she said, can we assess critically to 鈥渃reate a more just world anchored in human rights, not only for ourselves but also for our children鈥�. </div><div><br></div><div>Exploring at how we do that, Professor L贸pez revealed that ignorant or insulting opinions can offer an opportunity for deeper conversation and reflection. She highlighted the importance of building these conversations around narratives 鈥渁nchored in your experience鈥� that at the same time 鈥渟hift and create bridges of understanding for others who are different from us鈥�. </div><div><br></div><div>Moving onto discussing intersectionality, Professor L贸pez described it as an analytical tool to help people understand 鈥渃omplexity in the world, in people, in human experiences鈥�. It is, she said, 鈥渁 new vision for illuminating inequalities and creating custom tailored solutions鈥�. In other words, it helps us solve problems by unpacking the intersecting systems of inequality and arrangements of power. </div><div><br></div><div id="ext-gen2200">Intersectionality can, she revealed, help us 鈥渦nderstand how others are experiencing barriers that might be invisible to us鈥�. Explaining that equity is about providing whatever is necessary to create fairness, Professor L贸pez noted how treating everyone the same (in other word creating equality) might not reach individuals experiencing inequities before also describing liberation.<br></div><div><br></div><div>She said that to provide the equity lifts needed we should not only work with the people impacted the most but also with 鈥渢hose advocates who've been working for a long time to solve these problems鈥�.</div><div><br></div><div>Dr L贸pez concluded her talk with a very powerful message: 鈥淲e are all different, have different histories, different cultures, speak different languages, but if we work in a spirit of human rights and solidarity, there's nothing we can't accomplish鈥�. </div><div><br></div><div id="ext-gen831">During the webinar we asked our audience to reflect on what they would do within their spheres of influence to advance intersectional justice. It is more important than ever for organizations to reach communities where they are. The unique challenges we are facing have led to new and alternative ways to reach and support patient populations, as more people turn to online and social communities to stay connected. <br><br>We know immunocompromised individuals, like those living with myasthenia gravis (MG), an <a href="/_up/ucb_com_patients/documents/280519_MG_Infographic_FINAL2.pdf" class target="_blank">autoimmune, neuromuscular disease</a>, are seeking information on how COVID-19 could impact their lives and treatment plans. 金禾娱乐城 is participating in ongoing conversations with patient advocacy groups and physicians about what resources are most helpful for people living with MG and their caregivers.<br><br>We are also following the lead of organizations like the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA), who are quickly adapting their events from in-person to virtual settings. This flexibility allows patients, caregivers and their healthcare providers (HCPs) to continue learning and sharing 鈥� while maintaining a healthy distance from each other.&nbsp; <br><br>Recently, 金禾娱乐城 participated in the MGFA national conference, which was held in an online setting this year. The event featured a virtual exhibit hall and web-based education sessions related to clinical trials, treatments, awareness and tips for people living with MG.<br><br>金禾娱乐城 involvement included participation in the following events: <br><ul><li>A panel discussion on how clinical trials work and considerations for people with MG who may be interested in participating in a trial.</li><li>A presentation around elevating voices of people with MG for advocacy, disease awareness and scientific advancement, which highlighted the many ways patients can do this. These included providing input on clinical trial design and endpoints, participating in trials and participating in patient ambassador programs like 金禾娱乐城鈥檚 MG Leadership Program to share their experiences.&nbsp;</li><li>A medical booth as part of the virtual exhibit hall to provide HCPs and patients with information on clinical trials and the opportunity to participate in MycarinGstudy, a Phase 3 study in adults with generalized MG. <br></li></ul><br></div><div>We were grateful for the opportunity to virtually connect with the global MG community to elevate patient voices in a safe environment. &nbsp;</div><br>We have set up dedicated analysis facilities in our labs in Braine- l鈥橝lleud to perform PCR tests on patient samples for the possible presence of coronavirus. <br><div><br></div><div>As part of our engagement in this initiative, 金禾娱乐城 is engaging committed scientists and technical experts to support the conduct of the (laboratory) analyses and provide scientific input to assist national efforts to scale up testing capacity in the country.</div><br>Our rapid response has been made possible thanks to the tireless work of colleagues and collaboration with multiple partners. <br><br>金禾娱乐城 received its first samples for testing in the first half of April and continues to increase the number of tests it performs to assist the national testing efforts. We already have 39 colleagues carrying out tests and around 15 more in training to support clinicians in shifts across 7 days a week.<br><br>This is a joint effort of a consortium of one central reference lab (UZ Leuven), 5 analysis labs: University of Li猫ge, 金禾娱乐城, GSK, JNJ and Biogazelle, logistics (PPD, Cerba Research), Information Technology partners (Ugentec, MIPS, Itsme) and suppliers. This platform was set up with the Federal Government and the Task Force of Minister Philippe De Backer. <br><br>The 金禾娱乐城 lab is supporting the testing of samples collected from patients throughout Belgium, which are delivered daily by a recognized sample management organizations, engaged as part of the federal platform.
