We believe that innovation is at the centre of everything we do at ��ֳ�. We constantly look to evolve and improve our science, knowledge, and capabilities to help us continuously innovate. But beyond the science, ��ֳ� works hard to build a culture where colleagues feel supported, valued, and able to achieve great things.

To create a culture in which inspiration and innovation can flourish, it’s essential to nurture our colleagues, and prioritize the well-being of individuals in all aspects of their lives, including at work and at home. Beyond our role as scientists and colleagues, we are so much more. To allow us to truly succeed, ��ֳ� fosters a holistic approach where we are supported as fathers, daughters, sisters, and individuals and can be our entire selves at work.

I consider myself to be incredibly lucky to work somewhere where collaboration is embedded into the fabric of everything we do. Every day I collaborate with extraordinary people in my team and with other teams across ��ֳ� who are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This culture of collaboration is integral to pushing through the difficult problems on the edge of scientific knowledge to make new breakthroughs that ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients.

As a society, we tend to think of innovation as a series of big eureka moments. Newton and his falling apple, Archimedes and the golden crown, Marie Curie and her discovery of radioactivity. And while this is a romantic view on science, it’s rarely representative of the lengthy and continuously evolving approach to research and development in medicine.

Scientific discoveries rarely come from one person. While many famous discoveries have an equally famous face attached to them, the reality is a sea of faces, a collaboration between diverse scientists, working together to solve current and future problems.

At ��ֳ�, our discoveries rarely come from a single moment, because our patients deserve more. They deserve treatments with years of research, robust testing and constant questioning to ensure we’re never settling for just OK.

Sometimes, the answers won’t come from inside the walls of ��ֳ�, and it’s essential that we show enough humility to know when to bring outside expertise into the equation. ‘Innovation’ can mean many different things to many different people, but what unites each of these unique interpretations is an understanding that a key element is to challenge your thinking and the thinking of your colleagues. Challenging your own thinking and having others challenge it is integral to any culture which claims to have innovation at its heart.

At ��ֳ� we recognize that the solitary exploration of ideas will never be as productive as when we work together. That’s why our culture not only fosters curiosity but also collaboration. Collaboration between groups some may perceive as separate; with patients, academia and industry partners, can lead to the whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts.

��ֳ�’s passion for challenge and collaboration, and our people’s intrinsic curiosity, create an environment in which innovation can thrive and where external connections are encouraged. Our strong network of collaborators helps challenge our thinking and exposes us to new ideas and ways of working.

This is particularly important in an era when technology is revolutionizing how pharmaceutical companies conduct research and develop medicines, as well as how patients experience healthcare and how healthcare professionals deliver it. We know that digital transformation has the potential to help us identify novel disease biology insights, and our digital partners can help us to realize this.

We’ve been working closely with several high-profile collaborators in the digital space to combine their computational services, cloud, and artificial intelligence (AI) with our drug discovery and development capabilities. It is our hope and belief that digital platforms can support our scientists to discover and develop new differentiated medicines in a more efficient and innovative way.

The same pursuit of innovation and desire to challenge our status-quo, inspired and guided our journey into adeno-associated viral vector (AAV) gene therapy. We believe that this type of therapy will further enable our transition from symptomatic treatments to disease-modifying and potentially curative solutions. Initially we envision these solutions for well-defined monogenic patient populations, but with the ambition to address complex, multifactorial conditions in the future.

Patients remain at the center of everything we do here at ��ֳ� – a philosophy that is demonstrated day in day out; apparent at every level, from corporate strategic decision-making to the hallway discussions with colleagues. We recognize that innovation and collaboration are key in our mission to serve patients and society. It’s a bold mission, but an incredibly exciting one, and we can’t wait to see where it takes us next.

For over 30 years ��ֳ� has worked in the field of epilepsy and our commitment has never been stronger. We are working towards a future where we can impact the underlying causes of certain epilepsies and change the course of disease. But such innovation isn’t easy, so we work hard at creating the right surroundings and culture that nurtures and fosters innovation. We will monitor for new disruptive technologies, expand our therapeutic modality platforms, and seek out partners that can help us pioneer new approaches to drug discovery.

So, we are pleased with the recent news that ��ֳ� entered a drug discovery collaboration with GliaPharm. Co-founded by Prof. Pierre Magistretti, GliaPharm develops treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Their therapeutic approach is to target glial cells, the “support cells” of neurons, and to develop new drugs that target glia-mediated pathways as agents for neuroprotection and maintenance of cognitive functions. Under the collaboration, GliaPharm will use their proprietary GliaX technology platform to validate a series of therapeutic targets that we believe will enhance ��ֳ�'s efforts in discovering drugs for epilepsy.

When you look at collaborations like this and the connectivity we have between our people, disciplines and technology, we think it’s a powerful R&D mix that we hope will enable us to develop solutions that move from symptomatic relief to those that could address the underlying causes of certain epilepsies.
