The IFPA Conference 2024, also known as the 7th World Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Conference, is taking place this week in Stockholm, Sweden, June 27–29. Organized by the International Federation of Psoriatic Associations (IFPA), this conference is held every three years, and the 2024 edition marks the seventh occurrence. The theme of this year’s scientific gathering is “Uncovering the broad spectrum of psoriatic disease.”

��ֳ� is committed to improving the lives of people living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and is a proud diamond sponsor of this event. The conference will bring together clinical experts, healthcare professionals, researchers and advocacy organizations to share the latest research and updates on these immuno-dermatological conditions. An estimated 30% of people living with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, a progressive inflammatory disease that can cause joint swelling, pain, and stiffness, potentially leading to irreversible joint damage if not properly managed. Here are some highlights of ��ֳ�’s presence at the IFPA Conference 2024:

Scientific abstracts: ��ֳ� will present its latest research across seven abstracts with five focused on psoriasis and two focused on psoriatic arthritis.
Scientific symposium: ��ֳ� will host a scientific symposium entitled “Exploring the patients’ path: how can we raise the standard of care in psoriatic disease?’ on Friday 28th June between 12:15 and 13:15 CET. Leading opinion leaders will discuss and debate the latest developments in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting takes place this week in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S., 17-21 March. We spoke with Braulio Gomez, U.S. Medical, ��ֳ� and Owen Davies, Global Medical, ��ֳ� to find out more.

What can you tell us about AAD 2023?
Braulio Gomez: AAD 2023 is among the largest and most significant yearly meetings in the field of dermatology. Each year, this meeting brings together the community for a comprehensive learning experience, offering scientific sessions that comprise symposia, forums and interactive workshops. Hosted in New Orleans this year, it is anticipated that the meeting will attract thousands of medical professionals from all over the world. The event provides an opportunity for distinguished experts, clinicians, and scientists to share their expertise, best practices, and insights in the field of dermatology. As a long-standing participant of AAD, ��ֳ� is committed to advancing research in and to providing solutions that meet the needs of patients across a range of dermatological conditions. We look forward to connecting with the community this week to share and discuss the latest research, collaborate with peers, and explore the future of dermatology.

Can you share more about ��ֳ�’s commitment in the area of dermatology?
Owen Davies: ��ֳ� is committed to improving the lives of individuals affected by immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, and we are passionate about creating a world where these diseases no longer impose a burden on patients. We believe that collaborating closely with the community is crucial to achieving this goal, as it leads to a deeper understanding of patients’ needs, advances in clinical knowledge and scientific understanding. Our Patient Value Strategy places the patient and their experiences at the forefront of everything we do. Through our dermatology partnerships we are able to build strong connections with both the patient and scientific communities. This close collaboration enables us to gain a deep scientific understanding of dermatological conditions and helps us to enhance standards of care and demonstrate our dedication to improving patient outcomes.

Can you tell us about ��ֳ�’s scientific presence at AAD 2023?
Owen Davies: This year, we are excited to share our latest research in moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, active psoriatic arthritis, and moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa. We are thrilled to be presenting eight abstracts, which have been accepted as seven posters and one oral platform presentation. These abstracts represent the culmination of our commitment to advancing dermatology research and improving the standard of care for individuals affected by these conditions.

What can healthcare professionals expect to experience at the medical section of ��ֳ�’s booth?

That’s why we maintain deep connections with patient and scientific communities to drive innovation and co-create life-changing solutions.

Since 2015, our Patient Value Strategy has been the driver of ��ֳ�’s approach to delivering value for patients. Our operational model puts patients and their individual experiences at the heart of everything we do – from discovery to development to delivery. ��ֳ� has several strategic dermatology partnerships designed to obtain a better scientific understanding of dermatologic conditions, uncover unmet needs, and improve the standard of care for people living with chronic inflammatory dermatological diseases.

IMPROVING SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF INFLAMMATORY SKIN DISEASES

As part of our mission to understand inflammatory skin diseases, ��ֳ� is proud to partner on a new EU Research Project—HIPPOCRATES—to improve diagnostic and therapeutic options for people living with psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The overall aim of HIPPOCRATES is to promote the earliest possible diagnosis, increase therapeutic options and improve quality of life for people with PsO and PsA. HIPPOCRATES brings together 26 European partners, with involvement of patients, clinicians, primary care practitioners, regulators, small and medium enterprises, and pharmaceutical companies. The team of experts will evaluate and validate newly discovered biomarker signatures for the early diagnosis of PsA, identification of PsO patients at risk of developing PsA, identification of PsA patients at highest risk of damage progression and for personalized or stratified treatment strategies.

Cross-collaboration is critical to improving scientific understanding of inflammatory dermatological diseases and enhance care. In line with this, ��ֳ�’s partnership with IMI BIOMAP (Biomarkers in Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis) aims to identify biomarkers of variation in disease outcomes to address the main unmet needs of people living with atopic dermatitis (AD) and PsO, who often experience high variability in symptoms, disease progression and treatment response. IMI BIOMAP is a partnership that brings together twenty-six academic institutions, five patient organizations and five industry partners to create a pan-EU biospecimen and data resource of high quality, multi-dimensional datasets on skin and blood from more than 50,000 patients. The data resource will be used to examine the causes and mechanisms of these conditions and will be accessible via a central analysis portal. State of the art methodologies in epidemiology, molecular profiling, skin biology and mathematical modelling will analyze AD and PsO patient data.

In addition to this, ��ֳ� partners with The Accelerating Medicines Partnership®: Autoimmune and Immune-Mediated Diseases (AMP®-AIM), an initiative from the Foundation for the US National Institutes of Health (FNIH) to dissect unique disease-centric pathways for psoriatic spectrum disease and several other systemic autoimmune disorders. AMP®-AIM will advance scientific understanding of key disease pathways using new tools to map how cell types, cell states, and cell-to-cell interactions network to cause inflammation, abnormal function, and tissue injury. The resulting data will accelerate our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and causes of autoimmune disease, allow more informed selection of patients for clinical trials and generate new targets for drug development.

��ֳ� is also part of Psorcast, a new non-profit, pre-competitive research study developed by the Digital Biomarker Consortium. Psorcast’s objective is to collect and validate patient generated smartphone-based longitudinal measurements of psoriatic disease digital biomarkers that complement clinical measures and monitor psoriatic disease outside of clinical visits. The Psorcast app allows patients with PsO and PsA to measure and monitor changes in their skin and joints over time. The Digital Biomarker Consortium includes Sage Bionetworks, the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Clinics Multi-Center Advancement Network, and several other pharmaceutical companies. Helping to improve PsO and PsA diagnosis, understand their disease pathways and improve monitoring and measurement through these partnerships is just the beginning for us, as we continually strive to create value at every stage of the patient journey.

UNCOVERING UNMET NEEDS

To uncover unmet needs for people living with chronic inflammatory skin diseases, ��ֳ� partners with the International Federation of Psoriatic Disease Associations (IFPA), a pivotal international patient advocacy organization that unites, strengthens, and leads the global psoriatic disease community. Our partnership with IFPA allows us to better understand the unique underserved needs of PsO and PsA patients and support them in addressing the profound impact that psoriatic disease has on their lives, including in work, social activities, relationships and home life.
Furthermore, to help people living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), ��ֳ� and Stanford University established a multi-year collaboration that, among others, aims to better understand HS sub-populations and at-risk groups. The goal of this is to jointly develop unique solutions that combine clinical, real-world, and other data sets — along with the required expertise — to deliver better patient outcomes. The ��ֳ�-Stanford Digital Health Research Collaborative will enable us to develop a better grasp of the various expressions of a disease and embed the real needs of specific patient populations in our science and innovation process. By understanding the key unmet needs for people living with dermatological diseases ��ֳ� can, more effectively, create solutions that place these needs at the center.

RAISING THE STANDARD OF CARE

As well as improving scientific understanding of inflammatory diseases and identifying the highest unmet needs, we are committed to improving on delivery and raise the standard of care for people living with dermatological diseases. Given this, ��ֳ� has joined a pre-competitive collaboration with AbbVie, Almirall, GSK, Janssen, Leo Pharma, Lilly, Novartis, Pfizer and Sanofi to improve research into digital solutions for AD. The collaboration effort was led and facilitated by the Digital Medicine Society, a global non-profit organization working to broaden the acceptance of digital medicine to enhance public health. The pre-competitive collaboration arose from the common interest of developing a standardized “Nocturnal Scratch Measurement” to overcome these challenges. Following the year-long collaboration, during which ��ֳ� played a highly active role, the team has created a new suite of resources that will allow clinical researchers and drug developers to understand, communicate and deploy digital measurements of nocturnal scratching in AD patients.

Being liberated from the physical, emotional and social burden attached to inflammatory dermatological diseases is still wishful thinking for many patients, despite immense advances in drug development and the advent of novel therapeutics and targeted treatments. Epicensus is a ��ֳ� initiative that will challenge the status quo. For our Epicensus (Consensus and Action to Elevate Psoriasis Care) program, we have engaged a multidisciplinary council of experts—including clinicians, payors, and patient representatives—to gain a holistic understanding of the complex and multi-faceted diagnostic and treatment journey for patients with psoriasis. The goal is to drive action and initiate a paradigm shift to enhance the delivery of future psoriasis care in Europe optimizing outcomes and finally allow people living with psoriasis to experience life to its fullest.
These projects demonstrate what an exciting time it is in the field of dermatology—with science advancing at an incredible rate—and through connecting stakeholders across the research community and health systems we can realize its full potential.

Each year on October 29, the global community unites for World Psoriasis Day to raise awareness, spread information and increase knowledge about psoriatic disease. ��ֳ� is proud to support this day, led by the International Federation of Psoriatic Disease Associations (IFPA). Each year, World Psoriasis Day, takes a different theme to highlight the many aspects of this disease, with this year’s focus being on mental health.

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are multifaceted conditions affecting multiple parts of the body, like the skin, joints, or both. People living with these conditions can come at an increased risk of developing co-morbidities such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Living with these physical symptoms and risks can be debilitating and can cause a significant social and emotional burden, impacting mental health and quality of life. Approximately 125 million people worldwide are living with psoriasis. An estimated 30% of people with psoriasis go on to develop psoriatic arthritis.

Mental health is recognized as an integral part of health and well-being. Raising awareness and educating on the wider impact of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis can increase understanding and help ease the stigma associated with these conditions. At ��ֳ�, we have a long-term commitment to help improve the lives of people living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. By uniting with the community to address unmet needs, support clinical research and build strong, collaborative advocacy partnerships, we aim to make a meaningful difference.

We look forward to a future where the people living with these conditions can unload the burden caused by the challenges and uncertainties of disease.

We are delighted to be joining leading skin specialists and research scientists at the 2022 American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting (25-29 March) – the first ‘live’ AAD meeting in three years. Together we can make a difference on World Psoriasis Day

As a proud supporter of World Psoriasis Day, ��ֳ� sat down with Frida Dunger Johnsson, Executive Director of the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA), to learn more about the importance of World Psoriasis Day and how people can unite on October 29 to show their support.

“Together with our members, we share the vision of a future where all people living with psoriatic disease enjoy good health and wellbeing, free from stigma and preventable disability and comorbidities,” explains Frida. Reflecting further on IFPA’s mission, Frida confirms it is to “unite, strengthen and lead the global community to improve the lives of all people affected.” Each year on World Psoriasis Day the global community follows IFPA in this mission, coming together to raise awareness and call for action in support of people living with psoriatic disease.

As the only global organization representing and uniting all people living with psoriatic disease, IFPA continuously works to highlight unmet needs, and recently formulated five strategic goals to generate and share evidence to inform change.

According to Frida the most prominent unmet needs faced by patients with psoriatic disease relate to:

Early diagnosis of psoriatic disease
Equal access to treatment, specialists and individualized care
Training for healthcare practitioners to ensure adequate understanding of the physical, emotional, economic and social burden of the disease, as well as the impact on an individual’s quality of life
Multidisciplinary care to identify and manage common comorbidities
Awareness of stigmatization and discrimination.

Raising awareness is an important step towards combatting these challenges and making a meaningful difference to peoples’ lives. “We aim to make the world aware of psoriatic disease and the effect it has on an individual’s life, spread information and dispel common misconceptions,” Frida added.

In line with this year’s theme for World Psoriasis Day, ‘United’, IFPA is uniting individuals, organizations and IFPA partners from all countries and backgrounds to speak out from a common platform. In doing so, it hopes to empower ministers, governments, and decision-makers to step up their efforts to provide better access to treatment and care for people living with psoriatic disease. “World Psoriasis Day is a powerful opportunity to mobilize advocacy and stand united with the global community to unleash loud action and achieve targeted breakthroughs,” Frida remarked.

There are many ways to support IFPA’s initiatives on World Psoriasis Day, whether you are affected by psoriatic disease or not. Supporters can visit psoriasisday.org to add details of planned World Psoriasis Day activities to the global map, create their own World Psoriasis Day graphics using IFPA’s image generator, find out about the IFPA World Psoriasis Day Petition or simply interact on social media and join the conversation using #WorldPsoriasisDay. Frida concludes, “Any action you take brings us closer to our vision and, together, we can drive positive change for people living with psoriatic disease.”

At ��ֳ�, we believe that collaborating with physicians, researchers and patients is fundamental to addressing the unmet needs of people living with immuno-dermatological diseases, such as psoriasis. We recognize that there is potential to improve the lives of people with psoriasis and we’re looking forward to discussing the latest scientific advancements in this field with the dermatology community at the virtual European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress, taking place from 29 September - 2 October 2021. Now in its 30th year, the EADV Congress 2021 will bring together leading clinical experts across the fields of dermatology and venereology in a celebration of outstanding data and scientific exchange.

At this year’s EADV Congress, we will be sharing the latest findings from our ongoing research in dermatology across 13 e-posters and one platform presentation. Attending healthcare professionals will also be able to virtually join five ��ֳ�-sponsored educational meetings, including our satellite symposium, and hear about the newest approaches and advances in psoriasis care from world-leading experts in dermatology. Following the congress close, delegates will also have virtual access to these meetings and sessions up until the end of the year.
